Introduction

In the last 30 years the Muslim population has increased drastically in North America. Throughout this augmentation, many initiatives have been taken by various Muslim organizations to cater for the needs of their immediate communities and beyond by building places of worship, community centres, schools, educational institutes etc., and devising an array of programs ranging from educational programs, charitable programs, social programs, awareness programs and many more.

Following the horrific events of 9/11, Muslims began feeling challenged and threatened in the very place they became complacent in and had comfortably called home for the longest of time. Islam was now under the radar and was being scrutinized from every conceivable corner. This ultimately led Muslims to become more conscious of their identity and motivated many of them to embark on a journey to discover the true meaning of their faith and look beyond the cultural practices they passed off as Islam from the time of their childhood. Hence, avenues were created by people in the community to help such individuals through this expedition and thus conventions, seminars, weekend programs and on-site and online classes were introduced. These programs proved very effective and helped many become more conscious of their creator, however there continued to be a lack of authentic Islamic leadership in their hometowns and communities, thus making it difficult for them to maintain whatever spirituality they acquired through these programs. This still seems to be the case today. There is an ever increasing demand for scholars, leaders and imams who the new generation can relate to and connect with, however the void is not being filled by anyone who can truly satiate the needs of the growing Muslim community. Sending people abroad to acquire scholarly knowledge has become extremely difficult today and the avenues to acquire it locally are extremely limited.

In light of this situation, the Mathabah Institute has been created by the help of Allah. The Mathabah Institute is a unique initiative that has been formed to answer the call of the time and with the help of Allah it plans to deliver like no other institute before it.

Objectives of the Institute

1. To establish an institutional channel through which Muslims in the west can pursue a designated Islamic scholarship.
2. To educate Muslims on the Islamic sciences in a manner that it is conveniently accessible, easy to understand and absolutely relevant to the time and place we live in.
3. To offer accreditation to individuals who complete necessary credits
4. To focus on developing leadership skills to empower Muslims in the west
5. To produce the most powerful Muslim male and female leaders who are connected to Allah and who will endeavour to connect everybody around them to Him

Vision

Through its unique approach and convenient style, the Mathabah Institute will become one of the most powerful and influential Islamic learning centres the nation of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم has ever witnessed or come to know of inshä’Allah. With its base in Toronto, Canada and branches throughout various regions in the west, it will revolutionize the general perception of Islamic Scholarship with the help of the Almighty.

Style & Methodology

Mathabah Institute’s strategy is based on differentiation. There are noticeable similarities amongst various Islamic institutions. They all share a common message; "Spreading quality knowledge to guide our youth". While this is undoubtedly beneficial, we at Mathabah want to focus on offering something that is currently not being offered anywhere in our region. This strategy is based upon the idea that Islamic knowledge ('ilm) should be progressive and should bring one closer to Islamic Scholarship, spiritual enlightenment and greater social benefit. Where students don't just absorb knowledge but become beacons of knowledge, connecting them and others to Allah.  Students will not only take weekend and weeknight courses but will practically implement that theoretical knowledge in their day to day lives and use it for the betterment of the community. In short, we are keen on making students progress through their studies towards a goal, instead of offering open ended courses with no acknowledgements.
 
This is the Mathabah difference. With the Mathabah Institute of Islamic Sciences, students will be groomed for a greater purpose rather than just becoming containers of knowledge. They will have an obligation to uphold as leaders of tomorrow, and we will set their foundation with Allah’s assistance.
